Should You Be Worried If Your Child Snores?

Nearly every child – just like every person – snores on occasion. But some kids snore on a fairly regular basis, and as a parent, it can be difficult to know if this is normal or part of some underlying problem. At 5 Little Monkeys, our mission is to help kids everywhere get better sleep by offering a purpose-built children's mattress, but we strive to be an educational resource as well. So if you've been asking yourself if you should worry about your child's snoring, we're here to offer an answer.

Snoring & Children

According to the National Sleep Foundation, about 10 percent of kids snore on most nights. On its own, snoring isn't necessarily a problem: snoring occurs when the soft palate partially collapses and obstructs the airway, causing it to vibrate and create the familiar snoring noise as air passes by. However, snoring can be indicative of an underlying sleep problem like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), especially if the snoring is loud and happens every night.

So should you worry if your child snores? If the snoring only happens occasionally and is usually mild, the answer is probably no. But if your child snores on a regular basis, and especially if that snoring sounds very loud or you can hear breaks in their breathing, they may be suffering from a sleep-related breathing disorder like OSA. If that's the case, it's best for your child to have a sleep study to determine if they're getting the healthy sleep they need.

Try Our Mattress for Kids Today

A sleep study will determine if your child is dealing with a sleep-related breathing disorder and can help you get them the treatment they need for proper sleep. But outside of medical care, the quality of your child's mattress is equally important – and unfortunately, most kids mattresses leave a lot to be desired. That's why we've spent years developing a mattress for kids from scratch, purpose-built to give growing bodies what they need for proper sleep. Want to see the difference?
