Wash Often, Deep Clean Regularly
There are a couple different levels when it comes to cleaning your child’s bed. The surface cleaning, which involves washing the bedding, should happen weekly. Beyond washing the sheets, here are a few important deep cleaning rituals to perform regularly that will greatly extend the life of the mattress and improve your child’s health and sleep.
Air Out the Mattress
About once every 3 months it is a good idea to completely strip the mattress and allow it to air out. Even better, leaving it in direct sunlight can kill germs and mites on the mattress surface. Leaving the bed stripped with the windows open for a full day helps to eliminate odors.
Vacuum Up Dust and Debris
Dust and debris can easily build up on the mattress surface as your child sleeps, and this buildup can be easy to miss without taking a closer look when you’re doing the washing. Strip the bed and run a vacuum cleaner, preferably with an upholstery attachment, over the surface of the mattress for a deeper cleaning.
Treat Stains Immediately
Every parent knows accidents happen. The best way to prevent damage to your mattress is to use a waterproof mattress cover, but if this isn’t an option then gentle laundry detergent or dish soap can be diluted and used to spot-treat the stain.
