Managing a child's sleep schedule is difficult enough on its own, but the picture gets even more complicated when there are multiple kids and a newborn – and if you're unsure how to manage, here are a few tips on how to balance sleep schedules with kids and a newborn.

Tips for Managing Kids' Sleep Schedules

With multiple kids of different ages, sleep schedules get a whole lot harder. Kids need different amounts of sleep as they age, and trying to juggle diverse sleep schedules while giving each of your kids the attention they need can feel almost impossible. But there are a few tricks you can try:

  • Make Your Other Kids Helpers: One easy tactic to use is to create a definite routine before your newborn's naptime or bedtime, then involve your other kids as helpers in that routine. Kids like to feel useful, and getting them involved will make it less of a point of contention.
  • Set Overlapping Schedules: Especially once your newborn's sleep schedule starts to stabilize, try to have at least one nap coincide between your kids. Usually, this will be the afternoon nap, but you may also find it easier to have a morning nap overlap – either way, the more overlap, the better.
  • Different Bedtimes Are OK: While overlapping naps is a great idea, it doesn't always make sense to give your kids the same bedtime – and that's ok. In particular, newborns need very early bedtimes, so don't be afraid to put the baby to sleep first and put other kids to sleep later. This has the added benefit of giving you and your other kids some alone time away from the baby, which they may be craving.
