Back to School with Healthy Sleep

06/09/2021

A summer of smores, sleepovers, and late bedtimes is coming to an end, and it’s time to go back to school! Now is a good time to reset those routines that got a little out of whack during break, and invest in healthier sleep. At 5 Little Monkeys we know how important sleep is for focused learning, knowledge retention, and brain development, so we’re here to bring you the best mattress for kids for healthy, regenerative sleep, and to provide some tips to make the back-to-school transition easy.

Tidy Workspace, Tidy Room

One of the most exciting back-to-school rituals for your child is getting supplies for class, and setting up a workspace at home where he can focus. If your child’s homework desk is in his bedroom, it can help give him a sense of ownership of that space. Not only does an inviting and organized room encourage focus, it also provides an environment for healthy sleep.

Encourage Self-Sufficiency

Going to school is a very important part of growing up, and gives your child a healthy amount of responsibilities for her age. Of course your child will still need your help with many things, but each thing she accomplishes on her own, whether it’s a math worksheet or making a new friend, will increase her confidence and capability. Being self-sufficient at bedtime is another big part of this, so encourage your child to develop her own bedtime routine that prioritizes at least 8 hours of sleep.

Everything in Moderation

Now that your child has homework, friends, and a school schedule to juggle, this old saying is more important than ever. One of the biggest challenges facing kids and parents these days is managing screen time, and this can be even harder when computers or tablets are required for homework. Just remember that the blue light from devices can alter your child’s circadian rhythm, and so screens should be avoided or out of the room for at least an hour before bedtime.

Adjust Your Child’s Sleep Routine

Back to school means getting up early! So it’s very important to stick to a reasonable bedtime. Make a plan with your child to help them manage homework and get to sleep on time, and consider installing blackout curtains or a sound machine to help them fall asleep quickly and soundly. Dont forget an alarm clock!
